In Japan, finding the occasional cockroach or two in your house is often inevitable. The hot and humid summers here create their ideal environment to thrive.
Here are a few methods and suggestions as to prevent cockroach infestation, as well as what to do in the case you were to find any in your home.
Tips for preventing cockroach infestation:
1. Do not leave trash unattended. Cover any trash cans to prevent food odors that may attract cockroaches.
2. Make sure windows, doors, and plumbing areas (i.e. sink and bathtub drain) are tightly sealed to prevent cockroach infestation.
3. Clean your house regularly.
4. Use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture within your home.
5. Use sticky traps, place roach traps, and use insecticide sprays when necessary.
Popular Insecticides in Japan
Black Cap: These bait traps are designed to attract and kill cockroaches.
Goki Jet Pro: A powerful aerosol spray that can kill cockroaches on contact (similar to Raid back in the U.S.) It is easy to use and can reach cracks and crevices where cockroaches hide.
The above are typically readily available at drugstores, home improvement stores, and online (i.e. Amazon Japan, Rakuten Ichiba, etc.)
