Troubleshooting: Lights won’t turn on

Step 1: Ensure the light switch (and remote, if applicable) are turned on

Every light in your home will have a wall switch, and in many cases, a remote control as well (mainly for the living, dining, bedrooms).  Check to make sure BOTH the wall switch and the switch on the remote (if applicable) are turned on.  If either is turned off, you will not be able to turn on the light.  If you are unable to turn on the light, proceed to step 2 and reset the breaker.

Step 2: Reset the breaker

Locate the breaker box inside the home, which is oftentimes located near or around the bathroom area or inside a closet.  For apartments, the breaker is sometimes located in the hallway.  Check to ensure all applicable switches are switched to the “on” position (flipped down).  If a switch appears to be stuck halfway between the on and off positions (flipped halfway up or down), flip the switch completely down before flipping it back up (essentially cutting the power to that switch completely before turning it back on).  If the main breaker (a larger switch located to the left or right of the rest of the switches) is flipped off, make sure you flip this switch back to the “on” position as well.

If the light still does not turn on, it is likely the lightbulb/light fixture will need to be replaced.  Unfortunately, this does not fall under “normal wear and tear”; therefore, you will be responsible for replacing the lightbulb and/or fixture at your own expense.  Replacements can often be easily found at local electronics stores such as Edion or Yamada Denki.  There will be a size & model number written on the lightbulb or light fixture; it can be easiest to take a picture of this information and bring it to the store to ensure you purchase the proper replacement.  For translation assistance, please contact the Base Housing Office or your relocation agency (i.e. H&R Consultants/Relo Japan, Silk Relo, Japan Mobility, etc.)
